Gay Head or Aquinnah
RESTAURANTS
The outermost inn
81 Lighthouse Rd, Gay Head
One of our all time favorite places. Three course prix fix dinner, but come early for a glass of wine on the patio and make sure to stay for sunset.
The Aquinnah Shop
27 Aquinnah Circle, Gay Head
You’re really here for the amazing ocean view. We like to go for breakfast before the sun gets too hot (but they do have shade umbrellas).
Food at the cliffs
There are a couple other places serving food up at the Cliffs besides the Aquinnah Shop. If you’re not looking to sit down, grab something fast and casual from Cliffhangers to go.
BEACHES
Philbin
south Shore
Town beach, must be staying/renting in Gay Head, ask about a pass to the beach when you arrive. Whitney’s go to beach.
Aquinnah Town Beach
South Shore
Public beach. Pay to park up by the cliffs (the parking lot is at the bottom of the hill leading up to the cliffs). It’s about a 15min walk from the parking lot to the beach, but you can drop off people and gear directly at the beach before you park. A ~15min walk down the beach will bring you to the beginning of the Gay Head Clay Cliffs.
Lobsterville
North Shore
Public beach, calm water and perfect sand texture
Red Beach
Menemsha pond
Town beach, must be staying/renting in Gay Head, ask about a pass to the beach when you arrive. If you’d like to go kayaking while on the Vineyard, this is where you’ll pick up the kayaks.
ACTIVITIES
Gay Head Lighthouse & Cliffs
Worth a visit, especially around sunset. Walk around the lighthouse and up to the cliffs overlook. First constructed in 1799, the current light was built in 1856 and was recently moved back because of the eroding cliffs.
